Chelsea 6-4 Derby County
Date Played – 15th December 1990
Chelsea took the lead after eleven minutes as Gordon Durie raced passed two players and whipped the ball across the six yard box for Kerry Dixon to slot home. Four minutes later, Derby equalized. Nigel Callaghan – on loan from Aston Villa swung a corner to the far post. Mark Wright nodded the ball to Mick Harford, whose centre was guided into the net by Dean Saunders. Minutes prior the half time interval, Chelsea took the lead due to Derby’s casual defending as Kerry Dixon scored his second of the match. Gordon Durie scored for the Blues to make it 3-1 just before the half interval.
Chelsea emerged from the half interval and played as if the job was done. In the 62nd minute, Chelsea’s defence failed to clear and Trevor Hebberd struck a powerful shot past Dave Beasent. Dean Saunders levelled only moments later. To Chelsea’s disbelief, Derby made the ultimate comeback and scored a fourth to take the lead on the 75th minute as Gary Micklewhite scored from a Saunders cross. By this point, Derby thought that the Blues had fell to pieces, but how wrong did they prove to be. The Blues went on the counter attack that saw Gordon Durie race down the right wing with his cross being met by Dennis Wise who rose to head firmly past Peter Shilton. Chelsea’s fifth goal was the finest of the match. Durie collected Dave Beasents throw inside his own half and sprinted 60 yards with Sage and Wright chasing, however they failed to challenge him. Durie met the ball and astonishingly made it 5-4 to the Blues. In the dying seconds Graeme Le Saux scored to finish this match off at 6-4 to Chelsea.
