Chelsea started the match off at a frantic pace and Kerry Dixon was in outstanding form for the Blues as Chelsea won this classic league encounter against Title favourites, Liverpool. The Blues conceded two penalties during the match, however it proved to be the Blues goal keeper, Tony Godden’s finest ever match as he was incredible in goal for the club. Tony Godden saved two penalties in the space of two minutes in the match.

A packed crowd of 49,800 at Stamford Bridge watched a thrilling match between Chelsea and Liverpool. After five minutes, Chelsea player, Nigel Spackman slipped and allowed Steve Nicol to centre from the right and Kevin MacDonald hooked in a right foot volley which forced Tony Godden dive and turn the ball away one handed. After some impressive work by Ian Rush and Craig Johnston, a neat touch from Kenny Dalglish set up Steve Nicol for a shot, which was blocked. Chelsea conceded a corner under pressure moments later and Keith Jones was force to clear off the goal line.
With 25 minutes of the match gone, Dalglish scored one of the finest ever league goals in the history of the game as Ronnie Whelan, Jim Beglin and Kenny Dalglish all made some great inter play to for Dalglish to score a cracker.
Chelsea came storming back in the second half and had a penalty appeal turned down when Mark Lawrenson brought David Speedie down in the box. The final ten minutes saw Chelsea dominate the match; however Bruce Grobbelaar was outstanding in goal for Liverpool.
