After the resounding triumph of winning the 1970 FA Cup final, Chelsea were looking for further success during the 1970 – 71 season, however they could only manage to reach the fourth round of the competition this time round, suffering a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City. The Blues finished their league campaign off in an impressive sixth position. Peter Osgood was in outstanding form for the Blues through out the campaign.
Dave Sexton took the club to the final of the 1972 league cup, however they suffered defeat against a Gordon Banks inspired Stoke City side, losing the encounter 2-1. They endured a fine league season, finishing off in an impressive seventh place. Gary Locke was named as the Chelsea player of the year in 1972. The 1972 -1973 league season saw a downturn in the blues league performances as they finished the campaign off in 12th place. The Blues enjoyed a good run in the league cup, reaching the semi finals, losing against Norwich City.
The 1973 -74 campaign was the last season that saw David Sexton in charge at the club and it was not a fruitful campaign for the Blues as they finished of the season in a disappointing 17th place. They ere eliminated in the third round of the League Cup, against their Bogey side, Stoke City. Ron Stuart was installed as the new man in charge at Chelsea for the 1974 -75 season and it proved to be a short appointment as the Blues finished the season off in 21st position.
