Stoke City 2-1 Chelsea
Date Played – 4th March 1972

The League cup final encounter kicked off on a miserable afternoon at Wembley. From kick off, Chelsea’s John Hollins and Chris Garland dominated the midfield, and it came as a shock when Stoke snatched the advantage in the fourth minute. Obstructed by his own defence, Peter Bonetti only half cleared a throw in from Dobing and Terry Conroy nodded home the rebound after Smith had his shot intercepted. On the stroke of forty five minutes, Chelsea scored their equalizer. Cooke’s precise free kick was nodded on by Webb and Peter Osgood scooped the ball over Gordon banks while lying flat on the floor. Chelsea continued to dominate Stoke in the second half; however their attacks constantly broke up on the rock of Gordon Banks. Stoke netted in their second of the encounter through Eastham in the 74th minute and they had to hang on to the lead.
In the dying moments of the tie, Peter Osgood had a flying header well saved by Gordon Banks.
