Under the guidance of Tommy Docherty at the helm of the club, the blues were in emphatic form during the 1965- 66 seasons a year that also saw England winning the World Cup. The Blues finished the season off in a convincing fifth position. The Blues also put on a fine show in the FA Cup, reaching the semi finals of the competition, suffering a 2-0 defeat against the might of Sheffield Wednesday.
The 1966 -67 campaign saw the Blues reach the final of the FA Cup, meeting their London counterparts, Spurs, in the final of the competition. However they could not overcome Tottenham and lost the tie 2-1. Peter Bonetti and Charlie Cooke were in outstanding form for the blues through out the season. Dave Sexton took charge at the club in 1967 and in his first two seasons in charge at the club, he took the Blues to the quarter finals of the FA cup twice, suffering elimination against Birmingham City and West Brom respectively.
Sexton guided Chelsea to the final of the FA Cup in 1970 as his side met Leeds United in the final. Peter Osgood scored one of the finest ever FA Cup goals to help Chelsea win the encounter 2-1. David Webb was also outstanding for the Blues throughout the season as they finished off in third position at the end of the 1969 – 70 campaign.
